Orange County Bonaire 2013

Orange County Bonaire 2013 Dive Trip

Dive and Travel Insurance

by Marshall Krupp on 10/22/12

Unexpected events can occur when traveling and diving.  There are different types of insurance that apply to dive accidents, travel interruptions, medical emergencies and equipment damage and loss.  These events can be costly.  There are a number of companies that provide insurance covers.

DAN (Divers Alert Network) members have access to a number of insurance plans that are designed specifically for divers.  These can be reviewed at http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/insurance/.  For the money, the Preferred Dive Accident Plan is the one that I have used since I began diving.

Through the firm of Senn, Dunn, Marsh, and Roland, LLC, equipment coverage is provided exclusively to DAN Members.  Information as to this equipment insurance coverage can be accessed through https://www.h2oinsurance.com/.  Insurance coverage can include dive equipment, cameras, housings, lenses, lights and strobes for water damage (flood coverage), loss and other damage.   There is a simple on-line enrollment process and the coverage is very reasonable.

There is insurance coverage also offered by other entities such as PADI, NAUI, DiveSafe, Inc., Dive Assure, and Diver’s Security Insurance (DSI), and there may be more.  You can check these out on their websites.  I have no recommendations as to these companies.

There is a great 2006 article on insurance at http://www.undercurrent.org/UCnow/dive_magazine/2006/RightDiveInsurance200606.html.  It is a couple of years old, so you may want to check on the updates to be current.  If anyone has any thoughts on this, please offer it as a comment to the blog.

Bonaire Hyperbaric Recompression Chamber

by Marshall Krupp on 10/22/12

There have been some inquiries as to emergency services at Bonaire.  Bonaire has the 60-bed hospital, Hospital San Francisco (Kaya Soeur Bartola #2, Kralendijk), and a number of doctors.  There is also an ambulance plane on call for emergencies.  Bonaire received a new hyperbaric recompression chamber in 2008. This new treatment facility is located just a one-minute walk from Bonaire's San Francisco Hospital.   The treatment chamber was built in The Netherlands and offers space for eight patients.  At the facility, there is also a medical examination room as well as a guest room. The facility is run by a trained staff and admittance is via the emergency room at the hospital.   The emergency phone number for the ambulance is 114.  Information can be obtained by telephone at +599 700-5230 or by email at info@divemedicalbonaire.com.

Bonaire Trip Update as of October 21, 2012

by Marshall Krupp on 10/21/12

We have 14 of the 16 spots reserved for the trip, which includes four women and ten men. In addition, we have added a one bedroom apartment for a couple that has been added. So we will have a total of 18 guests. We have room for two more men, or two more women, or a couple. Please pass the word on to those who you may want to join us on the trip.

I have also posted the latest update to the Lodging Buddy Assignments and the Contact and Emergency Information on the Guest Info page. I have photo head shots of Paul, Craig, Gary, and myself posted on the Guest Info page. Please send me by email your head shot (jpg) for posting on this page so that we have a picture of each of the guests.

I have set up a separate account for the monies for the trip. One person has paid their deposit and balance and it has been deposited into this trust account. All balances are due on January 2, 2013. If you want to pay early (part or all), just send me a check and I will deposit the money into the trust account so that I can make the payments to Delta and Buddy Dive by January 5, 2013.

Also, please note that the forms that are posted on the Forms page of the website at http://www.yoscuba.com/forms.html and listed under Buddy Dive Resort Accommodations Forms and Buddy Dive Resort Diving Forms. These need to be completed and turned into Buddy Dive when we arrive at the resort.

Finally, nitrox will be available for all dives, shore and boat. If you do not have your Nitrox Certification, you might want to consider getting it before the trip. Nitrox will not be available without the certification. Also, make sure that your U.S. Passport is valid through April 13, 2013. If not, it takes time to process an update and this should be done as soon as possible.

Thanks and stay well.
